Design thinking is not rooted in design in terms of aesthetics, but rather based on a deep understanding of the principles of empathy, simplicity, and iteration as a means of problem- solving. Using large templates as a way to capture information creates structure for the conversation and helps keep things on track. Capturing something on a piece of paper in front of a group objectifies the problem. It puts it out there, so it’s no longer inside a person or group but outside and visible. This addresses one of the toughest issues groups face—people hold conflict in. Once it’s out there, though, graphically, it’s safer. It’s been released into the room. It’s not my problem or your problem; it’s our problem. Now we can muster the courage needed to deal with it and work with it objectively.
